What we do

Primary care is one of the best training environments in health – but not enough trainees get to experience it. Hosting a placement gives you a role in shaping the next generation, while bringing fresh energy to your practice team.

The Workforce Hub works alongside practices and trainees to set up, document and accredit placements, so the process is as straightforward as possible. Every placement type has its own requirements around supervision, duration and accreditation. Follow the links below to find out what’s involved for each.

Community-Based Attachments
13-week placements for house officers in primary and community care. Your practice provides supervised clinical experience; Health New Zealand remains the employer.

Capability-building funding helps primary care teams train to deliver services that have traditionally meant a hospital visit. When trained clinicians in the community can offer these, patients get seen sooner, closer to home and with less pressure on the system.

Funding can cover course fees, backfill or locum cover, and travel and accommodation where distance makes that necessary. Eligibility requirements vary by programme – follow the links below for what applies to each.

Current programmes:

PRIME training funding
For GPs and nurses in eligible rural and remote settings who hold or are taking up a PRIME role. Up to $10,000 per person for course fees, locum cover, and travel.

Planned care training funding
For GPs, nurses and allied health professionals training to deliver planned care services – like skin lesion removal or dermoscopy – in the community. Funding of up to $10,000 (rural) or $6,000 (urban) per GP or nurse practitioner.

Not all training is a full qualification. Some of it adds a specific skill to what you already do. Some meets a requirement, and some simply keeps you current as practice changes.

Length varies, from a short module to something more substantial. Most are straightforward to arrange, and many are reimbursed once you have finished. See what's available below

Cyber risk e-learning
A short e-learning that equips your nominated cyber risk lead to identify, document and manage cyber risk. $150 reimbursement per practice on completion.
