Community-Based Attachments

Community-Based Attachments

Help grow the next generation of doctors, and show them what primary care really looks like.

Community-Based Attachments (CBAs) give house officers experience caring for patients in the community, and give practices a real role in training the future medical workforce. Health New Zealand stays the house officer's employer throughout. Your practice provides the setting, the team, and the teaching.

What is a Community-Based Attachment?
A CBA is a placement accredited by the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ), where house officers  (usually PGY2) gain supervised experience caring for patients in the community. Placements run for 13 weeks in general practice and urgent care.

Why become a CBA provider?

  • Show house officers what general practice has to offer

  • Build the connection between primary and secondary care, with doctors who understand both settings.

Your practice gets $5,000 to support the placement, and Health New Zealand pays the house officer's salary throughout.

What your practice will need to provide:

  • Two to four named clinical supervisors, who are Fellows of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP)

  • A documented model for day-to-day support and escalation

  • Suitable consulting, clinical, and administrative space

  • A structured orientation, and a place in the practice team

  • Your house officer released for two hours of protected training each week

  • A commitment to meeting MCNZ accreditation requirements.

There will be a Memorandum of Understanding with Health New Zealand, as the house officer stays their employee throughout.

How supervision works
House officers are registered doctors working within their own scope. Your named supervisors hold overall responsibility. Day-to-day support is a team effort. Your nurses, nurse practitioners and wider clinical team all play a part, with a documented escalation pathway to the named supervisor.
